This guide has truly
been a useful tool in my business and opened opportunities for me that
I really did not know existed! I enjoy sharing my experiences that I
have encountered on my photography journey and I hope that in some way
it will help or impact others. However, let me preface by saying that
in no way is my way of running a business the best or the only way but
it is what works for me and my clients! :)
1. Tell us how/why you started photography?
I think my story is the same as other mothers with a camera...my
business began in October 2008 (my son was born in April 2008) after
friends and family began to notice my photos of my son on our wall at
home. My dear husband suggested that I start a business and just see
where it goes.
Honestly, it was very
difficult at first. I am an instant result kinda gal so I was a little
confused as to why people weren't just begging me to take their photos?
I struggled with pricing, shooting fast moving kids, pricing, website,
more pricing! Being a photographer is by no means a cake walk but I
knew that when I took a step back and started to notice my clients
reaction to the photographs of their children...my business changed.
Parents weren't noticing that I didn't have a 5D Mark II, prime lenses
or a lavish studio, rather they were noticing the rare moments of
laughter and smiles that they never thought could be captured. When I
stripped away all of the "stuff" and just concentrated on capturing the
moments my business took off!
My business is located in
Charlotte, NC. I am a on location, natural light photographer (aka I
don't have a studio) and my primary focus is children and family
portraiture.
2. what is your favorite genre of photography?
I know many photographers have a genre whether it is journalistic,
portraiture, wedding or art but I think my photography is defined as
documentary. Even though I am not documenting something in a political
or historical sense but rather I am trying to tell a story. I love for
families to have a photograph in their home that takes them back to
that special moment and it still feels like yesterday. I tend to
gravitate more to photographing children, families and seniors but I am
slowly opening the door to weddings. They totally intimidate me but
that is another post for another day!
3. what is the most valuable thing you have taken away from the Get Schooled Portraiture information?
Oh my. I knew as soon as this guide came out I HAD to get my hands on
it. Not only was I frustrated about my sons school photos but I knew
that others Mommies were too. The forms, marketing tools, and discounts
are FANTASTIC but I think one of the most valuable tools in the guide
is motivation and drive that Courtney gives you to succeed! You have
access to interact with Courtney and other photographers, the freedom
to ask questions and be open as well as receive invaluable information
and tips on the private blog. With all of this information at my finger
tips I know that I will succeed in this division of my business.
4. Do you have one tip/trick you would like to share?
I would like to share one tip and one trick...
Tip:
Keep your business simple. Right off the bat in my photography journey
I would HAVE to have this camera and THAT computer or THIS lens. All of
those things were not going to make me a better photographer but they
were going to drive me into debt! I learned to use the resources and
equipment that I already had and use it well. I learned to understand
my Canon Rebel XSi (Whoop Whoop) and shoot it in Manual Mode. Having
done that I now understand the technical side of photography which has
made me into a better photographer. I now proudly shoot with the 5D
Mark II because I earned it!
Trick:
Read "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson! Who knew that moving
your subject to a shaded area, make one adjustment to your ISO and
aperture could make all the difference in the world? There are so many
tricks in this book that it will make your head spin! I always had the
whisper in the back of my head during sessions "Oh, I will fix it in
photoshop" little did I know that I would be spending HOURS in post
processing!!! Get your metering down right the first time!
5. Tell us just a little more about yourself...
I
am a God-fearing woman on a mission. I am blessed to have a husband
that supports me and brings me back to earth when I try to take on too
much! A precious little boy that grounds me and reminds me that life is
not about the milestones but about the moments in between. I love love to read and totally sucked into the Left Behind Series right now.
I like action and drama...in the TV form that is and I am a
workout-aholic! I have been teaching aerobics since I was 16 and
haven't stopped since!
I
hope that on this photography journey I can make an impact on someone.
I think sometimes I get wrapped up in the sale or next big thing that I
forget that I am placed on this earth to simply love, not much else
really matters.
I
would love to connect with each of you if you are just starting out
with school portraiture, a pro (share with me your secrets) or just
like photography! You can find me and my work at the links below!
Thanks Courtney for letting me share!
